Growth needs a base
Founders often feel pressure to hire for sales or marketing as soon as demand appears. That can be the right move, but it is rarely the only one. A capable operator can make growth easier to absorb by building the systems that stop good opportunities from becoming chaos.
The first operating hire is not a generic administrator. The role is to make the company more reliable: clarify ownership, improve customer handoffs and ensure that basic information is available when decisions need to be made.
Choose the work before the title
The best hire depends on the friction already visible in the business. A company with delivery issues may need project discipline. A company with poor visibility may need someone who can establish a simple reporting rhythm.
The important point is to define the problems this person will own. A vague mandate can turn an operating hire into a collection point for every task that no one else wants.
Make room for leverage
When the operating foundation is stronger, growth teams can spend more time on customers and less time repairing the consequences of success. That is the leverage founders should be looking for.
